في رده على هذا السؤال الشائع قال البروفيسور ريتشارد بريل من جامعة هونولولو:
يحدث الرعد بسبب البرق، والبرق عبارة عن تيار كهربائي يتدفق بين السحب وبعضها أو بين السحب والأرض.
ومع تدفق هذا التيار الكهربائي تزداد سخونة الهواء المحيط بالتيار المضيء بل وتزداد سرعة سريانه تماما كأنه انفجار مدوٍ من الحرارة والضوء وينتج عن هذا الانفجار قناة فارغة نسبياً تسير جنباً إلى جنب مسار من المقاومة المتبوعة بالضوء المنتشر في طبقات الجو، ومع سرعة تمدد الهواء الموجود في تلك القناة الفارغة ينشئ الهواء قصفاً أو صفعة لا تختلف عن تلك التي نسمعها حين نضرب كفي اليد ببعضهما البعض ويؤدي هذا الصوت إلى حدوث رجة واهتزار قوي يشبه اهتزاز سطح الطبلة، ومع حدوث الصدى الناجم عن هذا الصوت وتردده في الوسط المحيط به نسمع هذا القصف القوي الذي نسميه رعداً.
